Welcome to Smithland, Kentucky

Smithland, the county seat of Livingston County, is located at the confluence of the Cumberland and Ohio Rivers. The red brick building on the riverfront, named the “Gower House,” is on the National Register of Historic Places. It was an inn built around 1780 for travelers along the rivers to stop for the night. The Jim R. Smith Memorial Bridge can be seen in the background. Flat boats, steamboats, ferries, and tow boats have played an important role in the history of Livingston County and its people.
